inseam measurement is a very important measurement when you are building your wardrobe! During this post we will learn what the inseam measurement is and how to take your own inseam measurement!

What is an inseam?

The inseam is the measurement of a persons leg from the top of the inner thigh(top of the leg) down to right at the ankles, right above the ankles or right below the ankles.

Inseam lengths are very important when looking to purchase jeans or pants. Another important measurement is your waist, your natural waist measurement and hip measurements but today we are discussing inseams!

Is there multiple inseam lengths I should be aware of?

Yes, depending on the style of pants you will measure the inseam differently.

  • Ankle- 1-3 inches above ankle
  • long- 1 inch below ankle
  • cropped- 1 inch above ankle
  • Capri- 3-4 inches above ankle

Below I explain the different style of pants

How to find your personal inseam

  • Grab a measuring tape
  • Put this at the top of your leg in the inner thigh almost to your crotch area(yea it gets a little personal)
  • Measure down to your desired length

This is easier done with you and another person

All different styles of pants

  • Ankle- measure 1-3 inches above the actual ankle
  • skinny- this inseam is up to you… where do you want your pants to hit? above the ankle or below the ankle
    • depending on your shoe choice will really help you to determine your inseam length
      • knee or over the knee boots look better with shorter inseam(above your ankle)
      • heels or booties or even sneakers look better with longer inseams because they are long enough you can cuff them for an elevated look
  • Boyfriend- meant to be loose and a bit baggy this style looks best with a shorter inseam
  • straight leg- this style should fit and sit right at the ankle can be slightly shorter
  • bootcut or flare- both of these are meant to go to the floor or right above the floor
  • cropped flare- should hit mid calf to slightly above the ankle
  • cropped wide leg- about 1 inch above the ankle
  • Capri- 3-4 inches above the ankle
