Art Deco

If given enough time all trends come back around. I am happy to say that a great trend from the roaring 20s is back now in the pandemic 20s… Art Deco

It really got me thinking about the history of Art deco and what is Art Deco so I decided to share with my readers because you may also be wondering.

I began researching Art Deco and I found that The Art Deco trend began in the 20s but became popular in the 30s, interesting not me for sure. Art Deco started in architecture and construction and quickly moved to fashion, accessories and decor.

Art Deco is defined as a style of visual arts architecture and design first appearing in France before WWI

Art Deco began its great influence in 1920 influencing the design of buildings, furniture, fashion, jewelry, cars, movie theaters, trains, boats, and even in everyday items like radios and vacuum cleaners.

Art Deco was a symbol of glamour and luxury! Everyone had to have it in whatever way they could get it even if it was a necklace or a chair in their living room.

Art deco is Bold geometric forms, Bright colors, and exotic styles

I LOVE this about it BOLD, BRIGHT, EXOTIC, WOW that is so cool, not to mention the symbol of glamour and luxury(insert heart eye emoji here!)

You can see examples of Art Deco when you travel to NYC or Chicago or any other major city for that matter

Skyscrapers that were built in the 20s and 30s exhibited Art Deco style; Empire State Building, Chrysler building, and 30 Rockefeller Plaza(30Rock) among many others.

I took a trip to Minneapolis for my graduation at Capella and saw a lot of Art Deco in the architecture design of the buildings

During the great depression art deco became a lot less extravagant because the building materials became too expensive (thankfully all of the gorgeous skyscrapers were already built by this time)

New cheaper materials were developed and Art Deco trend continued on

Important to note that Art Deco is not a single style, but rather a collection of different contradictory styles together.

With Park Lane we have a decade design very reminiscent of the roaring 20s and art deco

Remember what you represent

When in business for yourself, whether that be ETSY shop owner, a Brick and mortar store or a direct seller, you must remember that you represent your company, your product, your brand 24/7 365 days per year. Yes, you may go on vacation but even then you are representing your brand.

This reminds me of growing up and I never wanted to do anything that disappointed my family, I represented my family when I left the house, I wanted to be on my best behavior. The same feeling I have now as I represent my company, my products, my brand, my business.

This does not only apply to physically but also virtually.

How does one represent their company physically? Well if you are in Makeup, clothing, jewelry, accessories business you will want to wear your product or use your product everyday. Anytime you leave your house you will want to be at your best, not leaving the house in PJs (sorry those days are gone, I never understood wearing pajamas out of your home, pajamas are for bed, that is just me.)

Making sure your makeup is on and looking nice, not overdone like you are going to a cocktail event, making sure your outfit is looking nice not wrinkly not too baggy not too tight, looking professional(when I say professional I am not saying to wear a blazer and dress pants everyday or dresses everyday or suits everyday, you can look professional in jeans and a tee shirt).

Making sure that you are utilizing your products in such a way they are being highlighted in your wardrobe, you want the attention to be placed on them so that conversations can take place around your products!

How can you represent virtually?

This is going to get a little touchy, I do not mean any disrespect but this is the truth. We have to watch how we act, how we react, how we respond and what we post on social media.

When was the last time you looked at your news feed? I mean really looked at it? I do at least once per month but sometimes more often.

Scroll back through your news feed, what are you posting? The content of your posts is what you care most about. You should see some business posts, some personal posts, some fun posts, some serious posts. When scrolling through your news feed you should not see all political posts, all current event posts, all re-posts(when you re post something someone already posted somewhere else, like on twitter, youtube, facebook or instagram).

What did you feel when you just read that word? (Authentic)

When posting on social media you need to be authentic, be yourself, be positive.

I know that life is not all rainbows and unicorns and we should not portray a lie but we should also never be all doom and gloom all the time, we should view our news feed as a special place that our followers can escape our chaotic reality.

If you are a Christian by all means post Christian posts, Bible verses, motivational quotes, your favorite hymms or songs, 100% of your news feed should not be this though.

We like to use the 80/20 rule- 80% is personal and 20% is business

I like to split the 80% personal and 40% of my news feed is faith based, 40% may be my food, my outfit, quotes, memories shared, what is happening in my life… while 20% is business related: products, sales, tips, opportunities…

Sometimes my news feed is not balanced exactly that way, this is why routine review is crucial.

We have all un-followed that annoying person, you know you have. That person who only posts doom and gloom those eeyores of your life, on the contrary we all have those who are so happy all the time it feels fake, those tigers of your life. I say we all need to strive to be Pooh bear, he was positive but was realistic too , of course you may have a sad day share it if you feel, we all have something that we feel strongly about that is controversial; Politics, religion, abortion, Black lives matter, violence, pandemic, trafficking, immigrants…. (the list could go on and on) Post what you feel strongly about just don’t let that be the only thing that shows up on your news feed.

Remember that you are the face of your business and what do you wish to portray, if you want positivity if you want happy if you want beauty then don’t focus all of your attention on the negative things in life.

Major businesses like Macys, Walmart Target… pay lots of money to look good their advertisers and marketers work a full time job to keep the face of their company spotless and attractive to consumers like you and me.

We that are in business for ourselves don’t have advertisers and marketers we are the face of our business and we need to keep our business spotless and attractive to consumers.

Trendy yet Timeless

How can this be? You are probably thinking right now, How can you be trendy yet be timeless?

Well in fashion girlfriend if you wait long enough trends come back around to being in style! for example Bell bottom jeans.

Bell Bottom jeans became popular in the 60s and then came back around in the 70s again for a short time and then again in the 80s and then in the 90s and 2000s and now here we are in 2020 and they are back!

I was in middle school when I got my first pair of bell bottom jeans, I can still remember the chunky boots and the navy and orange stripe sweater I wore with them. Bell bottoms were the must have item in everyone’s wardrobe.

Now 20 years later yea I was in middle school in 1997-1999 bell bottoms are back in style!!!! (No I don’t still have my first pair I have grown quite a bit since then)

With jewelry; Gold, silver, rose gold and hematite is always in style no matter what season or year you are in. The style of the jewelry comes and goes, right now in jewelry we are seeing Big statement pieces being worn with everyday jeans and t-shirts, big hoops, art deco looks (reminiscent of the roaring 20s)

Something that is very trendy right now is animal print, tiger, snake, leopard/ cheetah. I am seeing it everywhere from Gucci to Kate Spade to Park Lane. How to keep the Animal print timeless is to use it as an accent, not too overdone don’t make it your main look rather an accent so a necklace or a bracelet or earrings but not all three.

Knowing this should make shopping for your jewelry easier knowing that you can wear it over and over season after season.

I really do think this is why style experts say that your jewelry and accessories should be 80% of your wardrobe budget!

Elevated Chicken noodle soup

Total time

A fun take on traditional Chicken and noodle soup. This soup is constructed the exact same way except instead of using egg noodles we use cheese tortellini for the noodle component and we add cream for that creamy component, this is very reminiscent of chicken and dumplings too, comfort in a bowl!

  • 4 chicken breasts

  • 24 oz cheese tortellini

  • 18 cups of Chicken broth

  • 1.5 cups of heavy cream

  • 1 medium onion diced

  • 2 carrots shredded

  • 3 stalks of celery diced

  • salt and pepper to taste

  • Shaved Parmesan

  • Texas toast (garlic) baked and cut into cubes

  • In a large stock pot saute onions, celery add chicken broth bring to a boil
add chicken and return to a boil reduce heat and simmer until chicken is tender(approx. 2.5 hours)
  • remove chicken from broth and shred chicken
  • add shredded carrots to the broth and add shredded chicken back to the broth bring to a boil
  • add tortellini to broth and chicken and bring to a boil and cook until almost tender(approx 5 minutes)
  • add 1.5 cups of heavy cream to soup stir and bring to a boil
  • reduce heat and simmer until ready to serve
  • ladle into your favorite soup bowl top with shaved parmesan and garlic toast croutons

  • Warms up nicely for left overs any day of the week, you may find that your soup thickens up if you wish you can add some more chicken broth or more cream to thin it out.

I hope you enjoy this soup when you fix it for your family, this is a large recipe but you could split it in half for a smaller pot but it warms up beautifully and makes great leftovers for days to come. Store in air tight container in the refrigerator for 3 days.
