Influenza versus COVID-19

As summer is winding down and we are looking at fall, preparing for our annual flu season, what will we do now that we have two major viruses active. I really wanted to provide some facts about influenza and COVID-19… you can do your own research of course, I will reference where I get my information and as always this post is never meant as Medical advice, simply to provide information in a world where there is a lot of conflicting information, trying to provide my readers with facts, I have a Masters degree in Public Health and studied epidemiology pretty intensively.

influenza is a virus that shows up each year, we term it flu season. Influenza have different strains every year hence why we need to get a new vaccine each year, some strains are worse than others some strains affect the young more often while others affect the elderly more while yet other strains affects all age groups.

Signs and symptoms of influenza

  • Fever
  • chills
  • fatigue
  • muscle aches
  • cough
  • congestion
  • runny nose
  • headaches

Influenza is a respiratory virus that is spread through respiratory droplets, when someone talks, coughs, sneezes, sings…

It is important to note that influenza (seasonal flu) is not the same as the stomach bug which is often also referred to as the flu

Influenza is a contagious infectious disease, and many probably are wondering why we have never had to wear masks during flu season… well that is not exactly the case. When you present to your doctor during flu season you will see signs that say if you have symptoms you will need to wear a mask, this keeps others in the waiting room or surrounding you healthy, the infectious respiratory droplets get trapped in your mask and do not end up in the air, on other people or common touched surfaces.

Why is it then that we are all being asked to wear a mask now with COVID-19 if we are “well”? there are so many cases where people are carrying the COVID-19 virus and are not presenting with symptoms so we cant tell if you are truly well or just asymptomatic…. it is best that everyone wears a mask during the COVID-19 pandemic to flatten the curve, to reduce the numbers of COVID-19 infections.

Back to Influenza for a minute for more facts before I move on to COVID-19

prevention of Influenza

  • vaccinations are the best way to prevent influenza(this causes its own set of controversy though and I will not be getting into the reasons to get vaccinated or not, that is your decision to make)
    • vaccines is the process of injecting a dead/live virus into a person, this makes the body think that it has been infected which boosts the bodies immune response to begin creating antibodies to protect the person from getting the flu or from serious complications, even with vaccines it is not 100% guarantee that you will be protected from getting the flu but if you do in fact get the flu your symptoms will not be as bad and you should recover quicker than those who do not get a vaccine.
  • cover your cough- turn away and cough into a elbow tissue or shirt to keep respiratory droplets away from those who are around you(similar to a mask)
  • wash your hands- This is the best way to help reduce the spread of the flu. Frequent and proper hand-washing
  • If you have symptoms stay away from people(quarantine at home or be in isolation…see these terms that are being used in COVID-19 are not new)

Size of Influenza virus- 0.08-.12 microns

Size of COVID-19 virus- 0.1 microns

Signs and symptoms of COVID-19

  • Fever
  • cough
  • shortness of breath
  • fatigue
  • headache
  • new loss of taste
  • new loss of smell
  • sore throat
  • congestion
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • body aches

COVID-19 is a respiratory illness and is spread through respiratory droplets that contain the virus that either directly comes in contact with other people, speaking, coughing, sneezing, talking, singing in close contact with others, or the respiratory droplets land on inanimate objects and the virus will live on these objects which can then be picked up by unsuspecting people when they touch that surface and then touch their face.

COVID-19 is highly contagious(see below with the comparison between other communicable diseases) Since it is very new(Novel) we do not yet have a vaccine and are still learning about the virus, so face coverings have been encouraged and even mandated in some states/cities. Social distancing and state shutdowns have happened too all in an effort to flatten the curve to slow the spread of the virus.

When encouraging mask wearing was not working or was looked at as unacceptable we did a safe at home order and yet even then caused a lot of controversy from pretty much everyone on my social media feeds, Perhaps they just dont understand the seriousness of this virus? We began reopening and everything seemed fine until the nubmer of cases began skyrocketing to numbers never seen before in states who didnt experience those type of numbers to begin with. Healthcare systems are on the verge of breaking just too overwhelmed to handle all the sickness.

One last effort to try to slow the rate of infection is for governors to sign executive orders to wear a mask, this caused a huge negative response once again from pretty much everyone, I don’t get it, this COVID-19 virus is very serious and highly contagious and the mortality rate is so high why aren’t more people agreeing that masking is a good idea?

So we have talked about the flu since everyone wants to say that COVID-19 is not as bad as the flu or they want to at least compare the two well okay so can I so here we go

information for this chart was taken from CDC, WHO, Contagion, Yale University

Transmission– How the virus is spread from person to person

Rate of spread number is known– the number of people who will contract the virus from one person

Incubation– the amount of time the virus lives prior to showing symptoms

community spread rate-this is also known as the risk. during a pandemic/ epidemic you will hear this number given to show the risk of infection it is figured by taking the total number of new cases divided by the total population

US Cases/global cases: From the above chart you can see there are more COVID cases than FLU but keep in mind that influenza is not always reportable disease like COVID-19 so those numbers are estimated.

When we know how a virus is transmitted/spread through the community we can better protect ourselves, right? So both of these infectious diseases are spread through respiratory droplets and being in close proximity to others, one (COVID-19) has a higher infectious rate. When touching common touched surfaces we need to wash our hands with soap and water, if that is not available a hand sanitizer 99% alcohol will be sufficient. Keep a nice distance from others that do not live in your household, cover your cough and immediately wash hands after you cough. If you can not maintain adequate social distancing (grocery store shopping, airports, airplanes, malls, office spaces…) wearing a mask can help to mitigate the spread by trapping respiratory droplets(no this is not 100% but any help is good enough for me) Influenza almost always presents with symptoms and therefore you know exactly who is ill and who is well, COVID-19 is presenting more often asymptotically so it is hard to tell who has it and who doesn’t, I think we should assume all have it, this is why masking is not necessary during flu season and is necessary during covid-19

Wearing a mask is not just for yourself but helps to protect others, it is thinking of others above yourself, this is not too common in today’s “its all about me society!”

I understand that many are upset about being told to wear a mask but I hope that if you are one of those people at least this post gave you a different perspective to think about. Personally I just cannot even imagine that it was me who gave COVID-19 to someone who is more vulnerable just because I feel good

See this example:

(This example is completely hypothetical meant to get you to think about it…names and situation is not based on any real life events, that I know of anyway)

Cara has a very large family that all love to gather at her grandmas house. When COVID-19 began they decided to keep grandma safe to not visit her, and grandma wouldn’t leave the house at all except to sit outside as she is 86 years old and has COPD and emphysema but is healthy otherwise. Easter came and went no one went to grandmas, Mothers day and they decided to all come one by one and talk to grandma through the window, she enjoyed that, memorial day came and went no one went to grandmas. It was getting ready to be July 4th and Cara called her 10 cousins and aunts/uncles and said “hey this COVID-19 isnt that bad right it is more like the seasonal flu, and not that we want grandma to get the flu either, I really dont think it will hurt us to have our annual cookout at grandmas.” They checked with grandma and she said “if you all think it is safe I guess you can come, I would love to see everyone!”

July 4th it was about 12:30 and Cara, her husband and 2 small children arrived at Grandmas to begin setting up by 4PM everyone was there and grandma had hugged and kissed everyone, she missed everyone so much. It was so hot they decided to eat in grandmas large home. They partied all evening and even put off some great fireworks and then all left and by midnight the damage had been done.

The next day Cara called to check on grandma and she was fine she said she had never felt better! Cara was so relieved. 4 days later grandma began feeling bad like she couldn’t get out of bed, she called her oldest daughter Tammy to come to check on her, when Tammy arrived she found her mom in her bed and she looked very unwell, she took her temperature and it was 104 degrees. Tammy decided to take her to the ER, she called the EMTs and called the family who all came and gathered as the EMTS took grandma to the hospital they had no other option than to sit at home and wait to hear something, they were not allowed to go to the hospital.

What seemed like an eternity finally the phone rang it was a Dr. who said he was a hospitalist taking care of grandma, he said unfortunately her tests have come back positive for COVID-19 and one hour after arriving at the ER she declined and was put on a ventilator and transferred to ICU.

5 days after grandma was admitted to the hospital and diagnosed with COVID-19 she passed away without her family around her.

The entire family was distraught and wondered where in the world did she get COVID-19 everyone felt okay they felt fine none had a fever…. all decided to get tested and 8 of them were positive with COVID-19, 8 of them were positive and didn’t even know it, if they had only social distanced worn masks stayed away a little longer.

That story was hypothetical but in reality it is happening everyday, think about it, are you okay with being asymptomatic and passing it on to someone else, someone else who maybe wont be able to fight it off?

I would say now more than ever people need to travel, people need to get away for a minute to relax, the problem is there is no where in the world you can go that is free from Covid-19.

-So what do you do?

-Do you cancel your vacation plans?

-Do you go ahead and go but change your plans slightly?

Well I am going to tell you that preparing to travel during a pandemic comes with a lot of anxiety for sure. What will it look like? How will it be?

I think that I think about all the risks too much because I know, sometimes I wish I didn’t know therefore I could just go along and not care about anything…

Researching travel during a pandemic will lead you into so many different directions and not really give you any solid answers.

At the end of the day you have to do what is best for you and your family.

Here is what I did. Planning to go to our favorite place the beach, everything was fine until it became the hot spot for COVID-19

Now going on vacation will put us at a bigger risk than just staying at home, what do we do?

I consulted with some physicians who I work with and they said go and have fun, be smart, stay away from groups of people, eat at outdoor restaurants or eat in your room/condo, wear masks when you can and feel like social distancing cannot be maintained. Wear gloves on the plane (yes flying is safer than driving due to the fact you don’t have to stop to get gas get food or to rest and you get to your destination quicker. I also purchased a face shield for added protection and some safety goggles in case we don’t want the hat.

How cute is the hat

The face shield is removable and you are able to clean it in between each use

The hat is adjustable with a tiny drawstring inside the hat.

You are able to see through the shield and it wraps around from ear to ear offering you front and side protection.

If that is too much you could choose to pick up some safety goggles I got mine from walmart for just a few dollars and they are pretty comfortable. I had picked up a pair from Amazon and they hurt my nose and face.

Gloves can be purchased at any drug store and you know you can get masks anywhere.

Finding disinfectant is another story but if you find some grab up an extra(if you are allowed) to pack to take with you so you will be able to spray the room down and wipe down all surfaces. Honestly we do this every-time we travel but this time it is kind of a bigger deal and considering you cant find Lysol or chlorox it is a little nerve wracking.

Making sure you have enough hand sanitizer, antibacterial wipes to bring with you too, lots of times these are the items which are limited purchase so you will need to plan ahead so to be prepared.

Getting groceries and cooking in your room if an option may be your best bet for eating meals, also if getting delivery( I am sure that delivery is widely available through delivery services), going out to eat needs to be carefully looked at and decided upon if you do go and the restaurant is full it is okay to turn around and find another place, see if you can find outdoor dining.

Basically do things as you do at home just be more careful because your vacation destination is not your typical surroundings.

Mentally I think everyone needs an escape for a few days, it will only help us get re-energized and ready to tackle the fall/winter season (which may prove to be more of the same or even worse conditions in which we have currently seen. I sure hope not but we need to be prepared!)

So have you had to re- arrange your travel are you trying to figure out should my family take a trip?

This is a decision that only you can make for you and your family but let me just give you this viewpoint

What are you doing where you live currently? Are you being careful, wearing masks, gloves, staying away from people, eating the majority of your meals at home… well cant you do those same things but while on vacation? I would say you sure can.

I don’t think any online research will give you any sort of peace or solid answers on whether you should travel or not.

I would check with your airline, how are they handling booking– are they limiting the bookings? are they booking the plane full?

Check with your hotel, can you use the swimming pools, is the beach open, are there plenty of restaurants with outdoor dining, can you get food delivered to your room, what are their rules of property if any(mask mandates…)

Go to the local pages online like the local chamber of commerce you can typically google and they will say if they have any restrictions on out of town guests, and they will typically list their mandates and rules for the city.

Check the CDC website for the numbers of COVID-19 in the area in which you are visiting, then you can decide if the risk is worth taking.

Don’t just follow other people on social media saying to cancel vacation and stay at home, this can actually be harmful to your mental and physical health we need to get away from our normal reality and although COVID-19 is everywhere a change of scenery will help. I mean we have been at home for 5 months now many of us working from home staring at the same walls everyday for the past 5 months a change of scenery would be beneficial.

Also don’t take my word for it either, you have to gather your own data, and make up your own mind is the risk worth it, if you decide to just be smart about things and realize that just because you are on vacation doesn’t mean you don’t have to be careful if anything you will need to be more careful.

Book Club- Week 2- Contagious Joy

So last week we saw different examples of joyless living and how to rediscover our joy in everyday life

This week we are turning sorrow to joy

The week starts out with a verse

for I will turn their mourning into joy, and will comfort them, and make them rejoice from their sorrow.

I= God

Turn= change

Mourning= sorrow

comfort them= gift

God turns sorrow to joy

This is so great to start this week, I am much more excited this week than I was last week just by this

God’s promise is that we do not need to ever linger or stay in joyless living

when our life is flat and gray God invites to to exchange it for the beauty of color and joy!!!

Everyone Loves a good before and after, we like to be able to see that transformation, same is for joyful living check out these verses

  • Job 16:16
  • Job 17:7
  • Proverbs 15:13
  • Psalm 126:6
  • Isaiah 52:9

And we all know that if anyone had a good reason to live a joyless life it would be Job so reading these verses were very intriguing to me

Look at Jeremiah 31:13

Then shall the virgin rejoice in the dance, both young men and old together: for I will turn their mourning into joy, and will comfort them, and make them rejoice from their sorrow.

Rejoice, Dance, Turn, mourning, joy, comfort, rejoice, sorrow

What do these words mean to you, read the verse and then think about these words what does it mean in the verse?

Joy bestows on us a beauty that radiates from within, have you ever heard beautiful inside and out, some are only pretty outside and that is not the ultimate goal to have physical beauty but to be beautiful on the inside it will automatically naturally radiate to outward beauty with no need for makeup or surgery(we live in a very plastic society, I am talking about plastic surgery that I am not a huge fan of unless medically necessary not just for looks for the sake of looks).

in Isaiah 51:37 he compares joy to the garden of eden and the Beauty that it creates is awesome!

Saved individuals always have joy it just comes along with being saved being a christian but it is very easy for that joy to get lost or pushed down with the negativity we endure in our everyday lives, i mean especially now you cant watch the News (local or national, I dont care what channel either), you cant get on your social media and see anything positive, I have often thought about taking a break from social media and if it were not for my small business(Ruby Ribbon and Park Lane) I would not even have a facebook.

This Bible study is so refreshing and I am finding joy everywhere I look, just by looking at things slightly differently.

Remember joy comes in the morning

Shop for FREE

So you know that Kohls cash is a marketing tool that Kohls uses to get customers to keep coming into the store to make larger purchases.

Most of the time I fall right into their web

I have been looking for a crossbody that is big enough for my wallet, clear bag of necessities(hand sanitizer contact lenses and solution, lipglosses…) and my sunglasses case.

I had $20.00 Kohls Cash and began looking because it was getting ready to expire and to me this like throwing a twenty dollar bill away.

I can’t justify buying a new purse right now but if using Kohls cash paying a few dollars I can do that.

I chose a really cute Sonoma purse hobo style crossbody. And I would be paying $4.00

I went to checkout to have the purse delivered curbside and it wouldn’t let me, the inventory wasn’t sufficient enough

So off we(my mom and me) went to our local Kohls straight to the handbags and I found that cute hobo bag in 2 color choices but I didn’t like it as much as I did online, the top(opening) didn’t lay right.

I found this really sweet Lauren Conrad crochet circle handbag and crossbody I loved it, but it wasn’t marked down from $59.00

I thought oh no I love this bag and it would be almost $30.00 with my Kohls cash but I jist couldn’t justify spending that. So off I went with both bags to the register for a price check

Remember the hobo bag woukd have been $4 online

The cashier scanned it and said $30.00…. so it will now be $10????

Next she scanned my favorite bag and she said $17.00

$17.00 I handed her the Kohls cash and left paying nothing and received $2.00 back in Kohls cash… WOW

I encourage you to always shop with your kohls cash, dont let it expire you may end up with a treasure!!!

So preparing to travel I am not what you would call a light packer, I cannot pack light, I try but still end up bringing way too much. So I saw these little packing cubes and thought hmmmm maybe these would be good to organize my luggage since I bring so much, right?

You get 4 cubes and a laundry bag which is very nice when traveling.

If just traveling with 2 carryon’s these cubes are too big and take up more room than just packing your clothes

However if checking a bag which is larger these cubes are PERFECT to organize your bag. Especially if two people are traveling together you can get two different colors of these cubes and really have everything organized from bottoms, tops, under garmets, swimwear, shoes and then you will have 2 laundry bags to put dirty clothes inside.

If you are planning a family vacation or a couple getaway you need these packing cubes and you can get those right here on Amazon

Product review- travel backpack

Okay so I am a bag person, I love bags and although I have plenty stored away I like new ones each time I travel, I love Bags all shapes and sizes.

So I began searching for the perfect backpack to take on trips and I found this one from Amazon

What initially attracted me to this bag was the built in sunglasses case, I mean who doesn’t need one of those and then all of those pockets, wow!!!

the color options were great too and it has a place to charge your devices very neat

Okay so I placed my order and anxiously awaited for its arrival

It arrived and of course it was like Christmas morning digging into the massive box though all of the bubble wrap it arrived in.

I initially loved the bag, I put it on and walked around it was super comfortable with the very padded back and straps, I was happy.

I began thinking what all I would stuff in all of those pockets… this bag has a lot of pockets

So when traveling with a carry on and a purse and a laptop and tablet and phone I felt like everything I would need would fit in this bag and be terrific!

I began filling it up with items I would “need” for travel and before too long the bag was stuffed to the brim almost hard to zip up

I placed it on my back and felt like I was going to fall over it was so heavy and no amount of padding would have helped with this. I looked at myself in the mirror and thought wow it is huge it stuck way out not like it did when it was empty of course.

So now what will I do? I love the bag, but not really for my trip.

I know I will use it for work when I have meetings or conferences it would be perfect for that with its included external charging port, tablet case and laptop case along with a place for my purse, a notebook/pen and bottle of water it would be perfect for work trips and business functions where I would be all day or would be perfect for college or high school students

This bag is perfect just not for my leisure trip, where I dont want a lot of extra heavy baggage.

If you are looking for a good work backpack or school backpack I would recommend this one for sure and you can get it here

Building a cheeseburger

I absolutely love grilling out

If you have followed along for anytime at all you can tell I love food, I mean I really LOVE food, it may be one of my favorite things to do, cook in the kitchen with my mom for others and gathering around a table with those I love yea it is my favorite!!! 🍔 😁

I love how you can really personalize and make unique cheeseburgers everytime

I wanted to share my step by step process of building one of my favorite cheeseburgers

Step 1: saute sliced onions and hot peppers(serano, jalapeño) in butter till very brown

Step 2: grill your seasoned burgers

Step 3: cook bacon on grill

Step 4: toast buns

Step 5: put a spoonful of onions and peppers

Step6: place a slice of cheese on top

Step7: place grilled burger on top of cheese

Step 8: place another slice of cheese on top

Step 9: place cooked crispy bacon on top of the second piece of cheese

Step 10: place 3 slices of dill pickles on top of the bacon

Step 11: place a handful of shredded iceberg lettuce on top and sprinkle salt and pepper

Step 12: place your favorite condiment on the bun hat(mine is hidden valley secret sauce)

Ta Da you have a beautiful cheeseburger with lots of spice and tang

Best served with fries fixed in the oven

I fixed a little nacho cheese to dip the fries in

I know I know many probably are saying you are missing a fat slice of tomato from your garden… tomatoes are just not my thing, I love the look of them, love the idea of them, I just can’t deal with the taste of fresh tomatoes, I keep thinking maybe one day but not so far…plus they make such a mess. Anyway, I love my homemade cheeseburger and hope it motivates you to grill out one day this week!!!
