Athleisure is not a new fashion concept. In fact it was first used in March of 1979 describing clothes that were being designed for people who wanted to look athletic, without actually being athletic.
In 1997 the term athleisure came back as a term to take notice of this time as a term to describe fashion made to resemble exercise wear but not actually functional exercise wear.
Merriam-webster added Athleisure to the dictionary in 2016 as “Casual clothing designed to be worn for both exercising and general use”
When the term first came up in the late 1970s it was meant to emulate athletic wear but not function as athletic wear. Now we are seeing athleisure as something we can wear to work, to the gym after work or to dinner. Athleisure is a multi-purpose versatile fashion.
Now that we have the history of athleisure, I love history… side note I actually obtained a minor in history while getting my bachelors degree, I really love history!
Lets look at some fun athleisure looks
